Firms to hire differently abled at DU placement

With the recession making little noise nowadays, companies are swooping on Delhi University (DU) to participate in the varsity’s central placement drive ning January 25. And this time, companies are also showing an interest in recruiting differently-abled students, according to Central Placement Cell (CPC) officials. CPC has written to principals of colleges to compile the performance records of students in this category.
CPC chairperson Seema M Parihar said, ‘‘Last year, only two diferently-abled students were recruited. This year, a company has already asked us to collect details of all such students to faciliate their recruitment on campus.’’
‘‘We want all the colleges to s us details of differently-abled students so that the process can be started as soon as possible. We have been talking to the companies regarding recruitment of these students as part of their corporate social responsibility. We hope more companies will come forward,’’ she added.
CPC was started in 2008 to recruit final year undergraduate students from different colleges through a central recruitment process. The facility was exted to post-graduate students last year. According to Parihar, CPC has made a stronghold in the university with companies willing to recruit more students this time. CPC has also been promised a package of Rs 14-16 lakh — highest so far — by a South African company once it visits the campus to hire students of MA economics, Parihar said.
Forty-four students were recruited by five companies in the first placement session in December last year. ‘‘Eight new companies will visit the campus in the second session. Some of them are willing to recruit 50-100 students together,’’ Parihar said.
